Captain Phillips er et psykologisk drama som skildrer hendelsene da det amerikanske lasteskipet Maersk Alabama ble kapret av somaliske pirater i 2009. Filmen er basert på en sann historie og skildrer spenningene når skipets kaptein Richard Phillips (to ganger Oscar -vinner for beste skuespiller, Tom Hanks, i Philadelphia i 1993 og Forrest Gump i 1994) blir tatt til fange av den somaliske lederen Muse (Barkhad Abdi).
